February 9, 2015

I-405/SR 518 Concrete Pavement Rehabilitation
BELLEVUE, Wash. – Atkinson Construction was among those honored for administrative and environmental excellence by Associated General Contractors (AGC) of Washington and Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT). Six projects were selected as winners of the Partnership for Excellence in Contract Administration, including Atkinson's I-405/SR 518 Concrete Pavement Rehabilitation project. The teams were honored for delivering transportation projects in a professional and responsive manner while also considering the needs of those affected by the project.

A panel of judges based their award selections on customer-focused administration, innovative problem solving, overcoming extraordinary challenges, effective contract administration, timely completion of the project, and overall project safety. Awards were presented at the AGC-WSDOT annual meeting January 8.

Atkinson's scope of work for the I-405/SR 518 Concrete Pavement Rehabilitation project included the replacement of concrete pavement in all four lanes of northbound I-405 from SE 8th Street to just north of Main Street in Bellevue, Washington. Crews also ground the existing pavement across all lanes and replaced 82 failing concrete panels on northbound I-405 and from Main Street to SR 520. Work also featured paving the inside and outside shoulders, installing traffic loops, and striping and drainage improvements. Atkinson's team also improved nearly a mile of SR 518 pavement between I-5 and Sea-Tac Airport by replacing more than 50 concrete panels and diamond grinding to smooth out bumps and ruts in other areas of the highway. Crews also replaced data loops and updated striping on SR 518.

To minimize impacts to the traveling public, a majority of the work on I-405 was performed during two 54-hour weekend closures, while for SR 518, crews used extended weekend lane closures to complete the work.
