BNSF Cedar River Bridge Replacement Project

Location
Renton, WA

Owner
BNSF Railroad

Contract Price
$1,700,000

Completion
Nov 2007

Description

Atkinson will remove the existing through-truss steel RR bridge and replace it with a new steel girder ballasted RR bridge over the environmentally sensitive Cedar River. The Atkinson plan is to erect temporary roller beams across the river, roll the existing bridge off for disposal, and then roll the new BNSF furnished steel girders onto the original bridge piers. The new abutments will be precast concrete on CIP pipe pile with precast approach decks.

The project site is tight between the I-405 river bridge (built by Atkinson in 1995), and the busy city street of Houser Way. This bridge project must be completed by November 23, 2007. The Wilburton Tunnel on our Bellevue DB project can not be demolished until this bridge replacement project is completed.

The new bridge superstructure is necessary for BNSF to haul the "Next Generation" 737 fuselage, manufactured in Wichita, Kansas.
