Easterly Tunnel Dewatering Pump Station

The Easterly Tunnel Dewatering Pump Station (TDPS) project addresses Cleveland's combined sewer overflow (CSO) challenges. This initiative was a pivotal component of the broader $3 billion Easterly CSO Plan Improvements Program.

Previously, the Easterly collection system contained both combined and sanitary sewer overflows (CSO/SSO). The combined sewer system featured regulators diverting surplus flows to local waterways and Lake Erie. To combat this issue, in-depth studies commissioned by NEORSD emphasized the need for deep tunnels for CSO storage and associated pump station.

Designed by MWH and executed by a joint venture, the TDPS played a crucial role in dewatering the storage tunnel system after each wet weather event. Its primary function was to pump combined sewage to the Easterly Interceptor, facilitating transportation to the Easterly Wastewater Treatment Plant. This pump station was positioned 230 feet underground, approximately 22 feet below the Euclid Creek Tunnel and Dugway Storage Tunnel CSO tunnel storage system invert (cavern). It spanned approximately 185 feet in length, 45 feet in width, and 60 feet in height. The main shaft, measuring about 45 feet in diameter, contained an elevator, the primary stairwell, and an equipment removal shaft. An auxiliary shaft, approximately 40 feet in diameter, accommodated the auxiliary stairwell, pump discharge piping, and HVAC ductwork.
