Macagua II Hydroelectric Project
In 1988, Atkinson began work on the Macagua II Hydroelectric project in Ordaz, Venezuela. The project included the construction of a 2,580 megawatt hydroelectric facility and a 15,000 square-meter, seven-story remote visitor’s center Construction also included a 12-gate spillway, concrete gravity dam with intake structures for the powerhouses, concrete non-overflow transition structures, and two bridges carrying a national highway.
Over the eight-year construction period, the project’s owner decelerated and accelerated the project several times. Atkinson’s adaptive management techniques brought the project to a successful completion despite a number of challenges.
