Atkinson Employee Bikes Across America in 11.5 Days
August 21, 2014
Hailed as the world's toughest bicycle race, Race Across America (RAAM) attracts professional and amateur riders from all over the world and raises money for a variety of charitable causes. Participants, including Atkinson Foreman, Jake Holscher, rode from Oceanside, Calif., to Annapolis, MD — a 3,000 mile journey.
Jake works for Atkinson's Support of Excavation Division and resides in Lakewood, Colo. During the day, he oversees shoring, slope support, soil nail walls, and soil stabilization; in the evening, he trains. Having prepared for the ultimate endurance race for years, Jake wanted to ensure that he could cover the expenses of his crew, including his two brothers, wife, high school wrestling coach, and a close friend, as well as raise money for Donate Life America, which is a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing awareness about the importance of organ, eye, and tissue donation.
An amateur rider on a modest road bike, Jake's only goals were to finish the race and send a message to kids that nothing is impossible. He never thought about giving up, even with just two hours of sleep a day. After 11 days, 11 hours, and six minutes, he crossed the finish line, completing the race in 11th place in the solo category.
When asked about his epic journey, Jake states, "There is something special in everyday. You can't give up on the day because you are going to miss something beautiful." Jake continues to train. For what, he will not say just yet, but he states, "It is going to be BIG!"
