Atkinson Wins the I-5/Portland Avenue to Port of Tacoma Road - Southbound HOV Project

Tacoma, WA - WSDOT has awarded Atkinson a $159 million contract for the I-5/Portland Avenue to Port of Tacoma Road – Southbound HOV project in Tacoma, WA. Atkinson will widen and reconstruct I-5 to accommodate HOV lanes in both directions and one additional northbound general-purpose lane. The project team will also add a northbound auxiliary lane between I-705 and Portland Avenue, construct a new southbound I-5 mainline bridge over the Puyallup River, demolish the two existing I-5 bridges over the Puyallup River, demolish and rebuild the L Street bridge overpass, and modify the Port of Tacoma Road on-ramp. After 15 years of construction, this final Tacoma/Pierce County HOV Program project will complete HOV connectivity from SR 16 south of Tacoma to downtown Seattle. Project completion is slated for September 2022.
