Atkinson Secures SR-91 Corridor Improvement Project
CORONA, Calif. – Riverside County Transportation Commission (RCTC), in cooperation with the California Department of Transportation, has awarded Atkinson/Walsh, a joint venture, a $627 million contract for the SR 91 Corridor Improvements project in Corona, Calif.

The improvements will increase the capacity of the severely congested SR 91 corridor by extending the existing Orange County Express Lanes approximately eight miles east into Riverside County. The project team also will improve the I-15/SR 91 interchange, including three miles on I-15, and a toll-express lane direct connector from the eastbound SR-91 lanes to the southbound I-15 lanes.

The existing five-lane interstate will become an eight-lane highway in each direction by expanding the single HOV lane into two Express Toll Lanes and adding one general-purpose lane and adding an auxiliary lane to manage the flow of traffic.

The project team will construct 32 bridges and install 100 retaining walls totaling nearly one million square feet. Additionally, 290,000 square feet of sound walls will line the corridor.

During the procurement period, the pursuit team presented two Alternative Technical Concepts (ATC) to the client, resulting in a significant project savings. The team optimized the interchange design for both the southwest Express Lane Connectors and future Northwest Express Lane Connectors and devised the most efficient and safe construction staging and maintenance of the traffic approach. These innovative construction approaches helped the team secure the project.
