SR-22/I-405/605 West County Connector Project – Western Segment Project Earns Multiple 'Project of the Year' Awards

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Atkinson is pleased to announce that the SR 22/I-405/605 West County Connector Project – Western Segment, a joint venture of the California Department of Transportation and the Orange County Transportation Authority, has been named 2014 Transportation Project of the Year by both the California Transportation Foundation and the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC).

The project links carpool lanes on I‑405 with those on SR 22 and I‑605 to create a seamless carpool connection amongst the three freeways. Under two separate contracts, Atkinson constructed the HOV-direct connector ramps, along with a second carpool lane in each direction, soundwalls, retaining walls, landscaping, and numerous on- and off-ramp improvements.

The interchange direct connector ramps and additional capacity reduces traffic congestion and increases motorist safety on the three major freeways in Orange County. The six‑mile-long project crosses the cities of Garden Grove, Westminster, Seal Beach, Los Alamitos, and Long Beach, as well as the community of Rossmoor.
