This project enhances the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport automated passenger movement train system to increase capacity by 2,000 additional passengers per hour. Work involves excavating 250 linear feet of twin, 24-ft nominal diameter tunnels and a 50-foot by 50-foot bifurcation (chamber) where the tunnels intersect and transition to a single, 700-foot-long, 24-foot diameter tunnel excavated by SEM and drill and blast techniques. The tunnel and shaft scope includes a waterproofing membrane and cast-in-place final lining and is outfitted with cast-in-place cantilevered walkways and parallel running beams for the APM contractors’ use. Construction was sequenced and coordinated to allow full operation of the airport.
