Atkinson Awarded Skagit River Bridge Emergency Replacement

May 30, 2013

MOUNT VERNON, Wash. – The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) awarded Atkinson a contract for the I-5 Skagit River Bridge Emergency Replacement project. Span 8 of the bridge collapsed when an oversized load struck the steel truss on May 23 and due to Atkinson’s previous success on WSDOT projects, the company is one of three pre-approved emergency contractors eligible to construct the replacement bridge.

Atkinson will complete the bridge replacement in just 30 days. As part of the contract, which will not exceed $10 million, the project team will remove debris from the Skagit River, repair damage to the remaining bridge spans, and install a temporary replacement span, which consists of two side-by-side 160-foot-long Acrow structural steel Bailey bridge spans. The connection will be paved, striped, and equipped with new reduced speed limit signs.

Completion of the project and the reopening of Interstate 5 are expected in late June.
