I-5/Steilacoom-DuPont Rd to Thorne Ln – Corridor Improvements alleviates chronic traffic congestion and improves mobility around Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Extensive construction efforts include rebuilding the Thorne Lane and Berkeley Street interchanges, expanding I-5 by adding a fourth lane in each direction, constructing grade-separated crossings over the Sound Transit railroad, and adding auxiliary lanes on the interstate and three intersection roundabouts. Additionally, the project encompasses a high-performance median barrier, retaining walls, sound walls, security walls, drainage systems, signage, illumination, and intelligent transportation systems.
