I-5 /Portland Ave to Port of Tacoma Rd - Southbound HOV

This project completed the final phase of the Tacoma/Pierce County High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) Program, which aimed to improve traffic flow and increase efficiency on key highways in the region, including I-5, SR 16, and SR 167. The project specifically focused on the construction of southbound HOV lanes on I-5 between Portland Avenue and Port of Tacoma Road to improve travel reliability for transit, vanpools, and carpools, particularly during peak congestion. Key improvements included the reconstruction of I-5 between Portland Avenue and Port of Tacoma Road, the construction of a new southbound I-5 bridge across the Puyallup River, and the demolition of the existing I-5 bridges over the river. Other elements included the replacement of the L Street bridge, pavement replacement and overlays on I-5, the installation of retaining walls, and upgrades to traffic management systems like signage, illumination, and ITS components. The project also completed a portion of the stormwater system and opened new HOV lanes along I-5, enhancing connectivity and reducing congestion in the region.
