SR 167 Southbound Lane Extension underway

Atkinson's scope of work included adding a lane to SR 167 in the southbound direction and extending the existing High Occupancy Toll (HOT) lane system from its existing endpoint at 37th Street NW in Auburn to 8th Street E in Pacific and the King/Pierce County line. Extending the southbound HOT lane reduced congestion and improved mobility, traffic flow, and safety on SR 167 by providing expedited, toll-free travel for HOV users, including transit, vanpools, carpools, and motorcycles, ensuring efficient and uninterrupted journeys for eligible travelers.

The project was comprised of a range of essential improvements, including:

  • HMA paving on SR 167 between 37th Street NW and 8th Street E
  • A new southbound HOT lane bridge over SR 18
  • New ramp meters at the 15th Street, Ellingson Road, and 8th Street E on-ramps
  • Intersection improvements at Ellingson Road and 8th Street E off-ramps
  • Two new noise walls
  • Extensive drainage improvements
  • A new fish passage crossing beneath all lanes of SR 167 at Jovita Creek
  • Upgraded intelligent transportation systems
  • New toll system infrastructure
